Monthly Special Event Programs

These special multi-point programs offer a unique chance to explore Alaska-based topics.  Each is only offered once a year so be sure to register early for your favorite topics, which include such popular programs as Sled Dogs with Santa, Call of the Wild, and Adopt-A-Dog. These all include support in our online Moodle classroom and our interactive Flash Kennels site.

Goldfever

Sept 16th : Gold Fever! Conflict on the Klondike! A miner is accused of Claim-Jumping. Can you help resolve the conflict by participating in a miner’s meeting? Join classes as they investigate the clues at a gold rush mining camp while learning about conflict resolution, brushing up on math skills, and investigating the history of the gold rush. Dog Logo October 21st Adopt-A-Dog: This special event allows students a closer, more personal connection with the sled dogs by having classrooms adopt a dog in the kennel. Students will examine their sled dog's base conditioning level, as well as their own, during the videoconference. Afterwards students can compare and analyze data through out the year on the health of their adopted sled dog, through a variety of content area activities, provided free to the participating classroom. Students will be encouraged through additional web activities to increase their "healthiness" as the sled dogs do. Who will be the healthiest, sled dog or students? This is the perfect videoconference to add the real life application to any health unit. Read More or Register


November 2010- Call of the Wild: Join us for this fact or fiction look into the important literary work of Jack London. Explore the true relationship between man and dog in the far north to analyze and identify the fiction aspects of the story. Register

 


Santa Dog December 16th Sleigh Time with Santa! As December approaches, with all the associated festivities, there is one subject that is always a bit touchy around the kennel... Reindeer! “Reindeer,” you say. “What about reindeer?  We love ‘em!” Well sure you do!  Everybody does, after all they are Santa's favorite.  But do you know why?  Do you know the ancient story of how sled dogs and reindeer once vied for Santa's attention?  Have you ever heard of the great mythological debate they waged against one another, each championing their respective abilities for the honor of pulling Santa's sleigh. AuroraJanuary 20th 2011- Northern Lights December and January are some of the darkest months of the year in Alaska, and that means more of an opportunity to see Northern Lights in the dark skies. So this month, Kigluait brings to you a special event about Northern Lights. We will explore what causes northern lights by examining literature and art about northern lights. The program itself will feature an honored and respected Talkeetna artist, whom will show us how to paint the Northern Lights, while learning about their scientific origin. Read More or Register

 


Rade ReadyFebruary 17th 2011- Race Ready! Calling all race fans! It is that time of year again...The infamous Iditarod Sled Dog Race is just around the corner and people all over the world will be hanging on the edge of their seats as they listen to the radio, watch the television and follow along on the web as musher’s race their 16 energized sled dogs 1049 miles across the wilds of Alaska! But how do you know who is really winning?  Who is doing well?  Who isn't! It is not always the team in the front! Join us for this special Videoconference event as we share what we look for, and how we look for it, when following the race!  Don't be surprised!  It all about math and statistics! This program gives you a GREAT real-world application for learning about fractions, ratios, and rate calculations!


LifeMarch 17th- Virtual Sled Dog Race: It’s Iditarod time, come join the race in this virtual sled dog race. Students take on the role of a musher and quickly learn about equipment and sled dogs in order to pack their sled and choose their dogs to race against other participating classes to the finish line. Along the way, students will see and interact with sled dogs, equipment, actual mushing and training, while using our online Moodle classroom to enter their choices to help them reach the finish line. April 21st- Mystery of the North: The Dog Gobbling Lake Monster: Fang has gone missing, and he is not the only sled dog to have disappeared from the shores of Benka Lake. Legends are growing of a large sea-monster growing in the frigid North Alaskan Lakes. Help fee the mushers of their terror of lake travel and the unknown beneath the ice. Students will use their scientific deductive skills in this CSI-style videoconference. Register


 May 19th- Survive! Abandoned! Crashed! Stuck alone and scared in the wilds of Alaska! Screech! Smash! There has been a plane crash! You and your classmates are the only ones that can save these stranded survivors. Join our incident command center to help the survivors take care of their basic needs to survive the wilds of Alaska until the rescuers can arrive.
