Human Training

The science behind maintaining a healthy and fit sled dog team is not much different than properly understanding our own health and fitness.

As we guide our sled dogs in to top fitness levels before any big event it’s worth the effort to see how we- as mushers- are caring for our own health and  fitness.

Just like with dogs there are a few key measurements we can take to keep track of our overall health.

Measuring our Heart Rate is an important measurement to take in order to keep track of our cardiovascular health.

Each month we are going to measure this for ourselves and record it on a spreadsheet that looks like this.

We are also going to want to record the overall time we spent each day being active.

You can do the same for yourself- or even your whole class.

Hey! This looks just like the data we take on our sled dogs!

It sure does!

We have “heart rate,” for both humans and dogs.  And we have “miles run” for the dogs, which is just like “hours being active” for us.  Pretty cool!  Wonder who is in better “shape?”

Why not make a class poster that tracks your favorite Flash Kennels dog and then another one that tracks your own class health levels!   Look for examples in the forums! And keep track of @Richardhum1′s “Activity” postings for fun contests to show off your classrooms fitness achievements!

Alright, here are some more helpful resources:
