Connecting our Videoconferences with our Kennel
The Flash Kennels Ning site is a great new resource for all of our mushing programs and will be an important part of all our upcomming Special Events. We feel it is a very powerful tool for teachers to extend the “virtual field trip” concept into a more long-term, meanigful classroom resource! Go check it out and let us know what you think- What's good? What could we improve? And do not forget to join! We want to make this the most useful classroom asset any content provider has ever delivered!
Here are just a few of the things you can find on the site:
• Twitter updates as I mess around out in the Kennel and on training runs.
• Photos of all aspects of kennel life
• Videos too! Both ideal fodder for writing prompts.
• The latest Dog Blog updates
• A regular feed from my Goggle Docs “dog data” spreed sheet where I record my training logs, food budget, race plans, etc-perfect for real life math applications!
• Google Earth updates with GPS records of all our training runs
• Forums for general discussions about sled dogs and specific academic activities based on data from the kennel
We have also begun a Ning page for Flash Kennels. But what is Flash Kennels?
In short, it is the dog side of things here at Kigluait Educational Adventures.
Years ago, Rich was very lucky to become a close friend, and most grateful student, of Joe Garnie. Joe is a legend in mushing circles and introduced me to the lifestyle of mushing. Beyond a wealth of knowledge and a foundation to begin my own learning, Joe gave to me three dogs, Mugs, Eskimo, and Gordon. The bloodlines of these three animals run through every dog in my kennel. And they were all great dogs, BUT Gordon was special and we really clicked! Joe actually named him for a childhood friend, but he reminded me of Flash Gordon- Savior of the Universe! Thus Flash Kennels was born!
When Christina discovered videoconferencing, and the power it has to introduce students to a world of experiences they would otherwise never have, it was a natural path to start sharing about sled dogs using this great tool. And that's how Flash Kennels became a key component in what Kigluait Educational Adventures is, and does.
But it's important to remember that Flash Kennels is a real, living, breathing, working dog kennel, with goals and ambitions that are in many ways independent of Kigluait's. In my mind, that's what makes our mushing videoconferences so great!
